AP AND TRANSFER CREDIT

Students who have started their education elsewhere have a few ways to have their prior Art credits applied towards their major or minor in Art at BYU:

AP CREDIT

If you receive a score of 4 or 5 in AP Art, congratulations! You can receive credit for a BYU course in the Department of Art. Since AP Art portfolios vary widely in medium and content, the Department of Art will select an appropriate class for which to give you credit. In order to request an AP credit substitution:

      •     Complete this form.
      •     Ensure BYU has access to your official AP scores. Instructions to do that are on this page.

Your application will be reviewed as soon as possible by faculty reviewers who will then make a recommendation for a specific substituted class.

    TRANSFER CREDIT

Some art credits from other institutions may be transferable to your BYU program. The process for getting these assessed and officially adopted is:

    • Gather all the information you can about the classes you have taken at your prior college/university (syllabi, course descriptions, etc),
    • Meet with the faculty mentor over your program of choice to review your classes and find equivalencies
    • Complete a major/minor modification form (this can be done in the meeting with your faculty mentor, who will also need to sign it).
    • Email your signed major/minor modification form to your academic advisor - or better yet, meet with them in person!

It is recommended that you complete this process within your first semester in the program.

    INCOMING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

A number of part- and full-tuition scholarships are available to prospective incoming freshmen (current high school seniors) and transfer students. For scholarships awarded in the following academic year, applications are due November 30th via Slideroom. Applications are open between November 1st and  November 30th of the year before applicants intend to begin their studies (e.g. November 2025 for students applying to enter BYU in Fall 2026). See our Scholarships page for more information.

    FAQ's

    • The department will review AP portfolios individually so that the skill set and experience of the artist is closely matched with acceptable substitute classes from the 100- or 200-levels of our classes. For example, a student whose AP portfolio shows breadth and depth of knowledge in ceramics might be matched with ART 216: Ceramics Fundamentals as a substitute. A student whose work shows skill in two-dimensional composition might be matched with ART 102: Intro to Art 2D.

    • Very possibly! We are willing to consider AP credit from students who have been at BYU for more than a few semesters. However, because the menu of classes from which we will draw substitutions is limited to the 100- and 200-level, students who have completed multiple classes at that level may have already taken the class for which their portfolio can be substituted.

    • Yes! Scholarships may be deferred for LDS missions through BYU's mission deferrment process.
